The Longyear City is the northernmost settlement of 1000+ people on the planet. Located 78 degrees north on the frozen archipelago of Svalbard, this Norwegian town lives comfortably between the boreal mountains in nearly complete isolation. http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Longyearbyen has a population of a little over 2,000 but is still Svalbard's largest populated area in the high Norwegian Arctic. There is an airport, school, several two-level shopping centers, supermarket, hotels, and restaurants. The port is accessible only in summer when pack ice recedes and one woman told me a Polar Bear with cub floated in on a floe two years ago! We, along with all other tourists in town, made a beeline for shops filled with Arctic souvenirs; stuffed walrus and polar bears; sports clothes, hats and T-shirts imprinted with "Longyearbyen" - "Svalbard" - and other slogans showing the respective tourist had visited above the Arctic Circle. Don't miss the Coal Miner statue in town center commemorating Longyearbyen's coal mining history. ...

In Summertime I work as a guide in the arctic, but what does it mean to live here in Longyearbyen in svalbard / Spitzbergen how does it look like and what does it feel like to be here- that is what I want to Show in these Episodes. So I actually have to correct the very details of this episode, thanks to a follower with a very good knowledge about this plane crash I have to say that: the piloting pilot was Pilot In Command and he LANDED in Longyear before but with approaches made from the sea side, not from the mountains. And "errors" has absolutely nothing to do with the altitude, it was other things that eventually led to the impact. for the detailed Report on the accident please have a look at: www.aibn.no/ra-85621-pdf Im Sommer lebe ich in der Arktis, aber was heißt es eigentlich ...
